My water is very hard: does Berkey filter limescale?

Berkey systems are not designed to soften water and do not work like a water softener or reverse osmosis system. Their main role is to make water clean and drinkable by eliminating contaminants.

Dissolved limescale (ionised form) can partially pass through the filters. However, coarser particles related to limescale do not always pass through, which can cause visible deposits to appear in the system or containers.

It is important to note that water filtered by Berkey is not demineralised. The minerals naturally present in the water are preserved, unlike reverse osmosis systems.

Key points:
→ Berkey does not remove limescale like a water softener
→ Water remains mineralised after filtration
→ Deposits may appear depending on water hardness

We advise against using a water softener upstream of a Berkey system. This can prematurely clog the filters and reduce their lifespan.
